Well, I was keeping it quiet at first, but the cat’s out of the bag now! I’m currently on tour with Josh Groban, which I must say is pretty exciting. Lots of traveling, huge venues, and I even get a pretty nice solo spot with Josh on “Broken Vow.” I played that for the first time at Chicago’s United Center, and boy was it a rush. We’ll be hitting many major US cities as well as a lot of Europe, so needless to say, I’m pretty excited about that. Check out Josh’s website for updates: www.joshgroban.com.

Also, check out this video of my electric sextet, featuring Gavin Templeton on alto sax, Brian Walsh on bass clarinet, Rory Cowal on keys, Dominic Thiroux on electric bass, and Caleb Dolister on drums, doing a pretty rocking version of “Fallen Angeles.” We recorded this at Joe Bartone’s house back in March and Thomas Nolle did the video – thanks guys for hooking that up!

And don’t worry, I’ll be coming back from tour with lots of new compositions to get busy on with my LA compatriots, as well as new recordings on the way from the Vinny Golia Sextet, Orkestar Meze, and more!

This spring has been a pretty incredible explosion of performing and creativity! I’m happy to say it’s been the busiest time professionally of my life thus far. Some highlights have included the release of my latest album Fallen Angeles by The Daniel Rosenboom Septet and very successful performances by that same group at Los Angeles’s Blue Whale and Royal/T, New York City’s The Stone, and the Santa Barbara New Music Series. Also, this spring saw the formation of the Daniel Rosenboom Quartet, featuring Rory Cowal, Matt Mayhall, and Dominic Thiroux. This is an exciting new group and I’m really looking forward to expanding both my own personal improvisational language, as well as our group rapport in the coming months.

Here’s a video from the Septet’s CD release show at Blue Whale in Los Angeles (with live video art by Kio Griffith):

In February, I had the distinct honor of working closely with two Los Angeles musical titans whom I greatly admire and respect, namely Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and Geoff Gallegos (aka Double G). First I was delighted to perform with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson‘s stellar ensemble for their performance at the Natural History Museum’s “First Fridays” series. This was an awesome performance featuring some of incredible musicians, including Evan Francis on flute, Joey Dosik on alto and voice, Kamasi Washington on tenor, Garrett Smith on trombone, Rebekah Raff on harp, Marcel Camargo on guitar, Brandon Coleman on keys, Edwin Livingston on bass, and Gene Coye on drums, as well as Miguel on violin and myself on trumpet. Secondly, I was truly proud to be a part of GG’s epic jazz recording vision for his NineNet. In residence at Salon de la Plaza in Boyle Heights every Thursday in February, the NineNet recorded multiple live takes of 40 different songs composed and arranged by GG in front of a loyal and appreciative audience. This was a truly ambitious project and will result in a record release (possibly multiple releases) later this year. That group included Chris Bautista and myself on trumpet, Shaunte Palmer on trombone, Tracy Wannomae on alto, Matthew DeMerritt on tenor, Geoff Gallegos (GG) on bari, Emile Porée on guitar, JP Maramba on bass, and Miles Senzaki on drums.

In March The Industrial Jazz Group made a whirlwind trip to Milano, Italy, to perform at Teatro Manzoni as part of their Sunday brunch series. We performed in front of 900 enthusiastic Italians and really achieved new musical heights as a group! Upon return an electric version of my sextet recorded for a video documentary series detailing the underground jazz scene in Los Angeles – more details on that as they become available. Also in March, I had the distinct honor of playing principal trumpet with the Long Beach Opera, which has continued through May, and performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group in their Green Umbrella concert series, which I did again in early April.

April saw two milestone creative moments for me – one was performing with my septet, DR. MiNT, and the Vinny Golia Sextet at The Stone in New York City. I have long wanted to perform my music at this venue as I have a great reverence for the scene surrounding it and the output of John Zorn and his associates. Also in April, RootSystem was joined by Miguel-Atwood Ferguson’s Quartetto Fantastico for a month-long residency at the Blue Whale in Los Angeles, which was a truly epic experience, culminating in consecutive sold out shows and a ton of new music learned and performed!

May has been a month of spectacular growth for me personally, as I was able to perform 3 time with my quartet and once with my septet, in addition to performances with PLOTZ!, Orkestar Meze, RootSystem, NineNet, Long Beach Opera, the Vinny Golia Sextet, and begin a new band with Fabrice Martinez from Fishtank Ensemble called Califa. It seemed in May that I was performing in a different project almost every night of the week. So much playing yielded a swell in both ability, confidence, and creativity that has me very excited. This culminated with the Los Angeles Jazz Collective‘s Memorial Day Weekend Festival, which hosted both my septet and the Vinny Golia Sextet.

Here is the entire Septet performance from the Los Angeles Jazz Collective’s Memorial Day Weekend Festival from their live stream:

Following that epic performance Rachel Cantrell of The Jazz Post did a really nice interview with me, which you can read here: http://www.thejazzpost.com/lajc-memoweefest-daniel-rosenboom/

Entering June, I’m looking forward to another month filled with performances, especially by PLOTZ!. We start with an amazing night of gypsy music at the Bootleg Theater tonight (June 1st), as well as two performances at Bar Lubitsch and Bordello Bar next week. On June 12th, I’ll be performing with RootSystem again, and on June 15th with Califa. Orkestar Meze continues our first-friday residency at Rusty’s Surf Ranch, which will continue through the summer.

All told, this has been an amazing spring and I’m looking forward to an amazing summer!

While I told myself that I would be more diligent in updating my website with news and information, I’ve been somewhat lax in the las 3 months. Hopefully, I’ll be able to turn that around in 2011. Looking back on 2010, so many wonderful things happened, especially since my last update. I’ve had the pleasure of continuing to perform with the Vinny Golia Sextet, PLOTZ!, DR. MiNT, Orkestar MEZÉ, RootSystem, Industrial Jazz Group, Killsonic, and Dorian Wood, and have been honored to be involved in some new projects and groups as well. It has been a pleasure to commence the Rosenboom/Templeton Quartet with cohort Gavin Templeton (saxophones). Performing mostly our own original music, we have joined forces with bassist Dominic Thiroux and drummer Sinclair Lott. This has been truly an inspiring collaboration. Also, I’ve been humbled and honored to be part of the legendary GG’s Concert Nonet, which aims to continue with some ambitious projects through 2011.

One of the true highlights of this fall for me was working on Governing Bodies, a smashingly successful and beautiful piece by Heidi Duckler’s Collage Dance Theatre at Los Angeles City Hall. Teaming up with Gavin Templeton on clarinet and alto saxophone and Vinny Golia on bass clarinet, soprano and baritone saxophones, as well as vocalists Karina Kallas and Danielle Birritella, I had the honor of creating the score for this magical piece, which featured these live musicians as well as a prerecorded soundtrack of body percussion, vocalisations and sonic texture. Here’s a small preview of the epic 50-minute experience:

In looking forward to 2011, there are so many exciting things on the horizon. I’m anxiously anticipating the release of a brand new album, Fallen Angeles, the first release by The Daniel Rosenboom Septet. Featuring, Gavin Templeton, Brian Walsh, Vinny Golia, David Rosenboom, Sam Minaie, and Caleb Dolister, this album is an intensely personal and reflective statement, and a truly exciting listen. Check it out here!
    Fallen Angeles by danielrosenboom

This group will make it’s debut on January 12th at Royal/T in Los Angeles, and then play on January 13th on the Santa Barbara Mew Music Series. Later in the year, we have performances scheduled at Blue Whale in Los Angeles (January 27th) and at The Stone in New York City (April 13th). Surely more will be scheduled, and they’ll be added to the gig calendar on my ‘Shows’ page.

Also in 2011, GG’s Concert Nonet will be recording a new album, DR. MiNT will be releasing our long-anticipated 3rd album, and possibly a band new one which we recorded back in November. The Industrial Jazz Group will be going to Milano, Italy, and The Vinny Golia Sextet, The Vinny Golia Octet, and DR. MiNT will all be playing at The Stone in New York City. Also, I’ll be performing Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Halt with the legendary Dennis Trembly at the International Society of Bassists convention in San Francisco in June, and playing the part of Chet Baker in a piece by Harry Partch at REDCAT, also in June. Considering the year is four days old, I’d have to say I’m pretty excited about what 2011 holds! Happy New Year everyone – all the best to you and yours!

Last Sunday was one of the most intense and epic musical experiences of my life. The Vinny Golia Sextet (featuring Vinny Golia, baritone and sopranino saxophone, Gavin Templeton, alto sax, Alex Noice, electric guitar, Jon Armstrong, electric bass, Andrew Lessman, drums, and myself on trumpet) performed at the Ford Amphitheater where we shared the stage with some of jazz and creative music’s true legends, and some of my personal heroes. First, Kneebody opened the evening with a riveting set of original music. We performed after, which to me is still a blur – such a rush, but hard to remember really what happened! Following our set, the Sons of Champignon (Tim Berne, alto sax, Nels Cline, electric guitar, and Jim Black, drums and laptop programming) threw down one of the most incredible performances I’ve ever seen. Completely free and absolutely brilliant improvisation, the set rocked the Ford to its core! I have to admit, I got a little giddy during this performance – I felt like a little kid in total rapture! Following the Sons of Champignon, Wadada Leo Smith’s Golden Quartet delivered some of the deepest artistic expression I’ve ever witnessed. I was on cloud nine as I watched my first trumpet teacher and one of my true idols float around the stage like a spirit, delivering truth with every note he played. Vijay Iyer on piano, John Lindberg on bass, and Pheeroan akLaaf on drums, blew my mind as well, each with a unique and powerful voice. Finally, the night was capped off with the Ralph Alessi/Ravi Coltrane Quintet, featuring Larry Koonse, guitar, Darek Oles, bass, and Steve Hass, drums. These guys played exquisitely, flowing through compelling original compositions with astonishing grace and virtuosity.

This was truly one for the books. I am more than honored to have shared the stage with such incredible voices, and the hang backstage was completely surreal. And I must say here what an honor it is to dedicate myself, along with my bandmates, to the compositional and aesthetic voice of Vinny Golia, whose true genius is yet to be fully recognized. Vinny writes some of the most intricate, complex, and compelling music I have ever performed and to play in his band is an absolute joy. Thank you Vinny for believing in us, and for giving us the opportunity to experience such amazing music in such an epic context. I will remember this experience forever.

Yesterday was a pretty exciting day of festivals! PLOTZ! burned up the Camarillo Arts and Jazz Festival in the afternoon and Killsonic brought musical mayhem to the Glow Festival at the Santa Monica Pier. I want to give special thanks to the folks at Rock City Studios who hosted PLOTZ! at the Camarillo Arts and Jazz Festival and a special shout out to Headless Robot, who played before us and killed it! Also, I want to give a plug to Jake Vossler, whose band, WHALE will crumble the walls of Rock City with their amazing brand of metal on October 2nd – if you’re anywhere near Camarillo, make sure to check this out!

My reunion with Killsonic was spectacular! What better way to rejoin this collective of Los Angeles street folk jazz madmen (and women) than to celebrate leader Mike Ibarra’s birthday on the beach amidst thousands of Angelinos glowing with luminescent head/body gear and artwork spanning the length of the Santa Monica boardwalk, and blaring frenzied free jazz at the ocean on the end of the pier?!?!? Epic.

Now, the Vinny Golia Sextet enters our final week of preparation for the Angel CIty Jazz Festival at the Ford Amphitheater next Sunday, October 3rd. This band has dedicated itself to the music of the celebrated reedman and all of our mentor, and we’re really excited about this opportunity to showcase his compositional and improvisational genius amidst some of the jazz world’s heaviest hitters. We will share the stage with Ravi Coltrane, Ralph Alessi, Wadada Leo Smith, Vijay Iyer, Nels Cline, Tim Berne, Jim Black, and Kneebody!!! What a lineup! This will truly be a memorable musical moment!

I love my friends, and I love making music with them. It is an honor, a pleasure and a truly fulfilling experience!

Last Thursday Night, I had the distinct honor of sharing the stage with a truly legendary musician. Dennis Trembly, principal bass of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and bass instructor at the University of Southern California, gave his final recital after 30 years as a faculty member at USC, and opened his program with the duo for trumpet and double bass, Halt! by Karlheinz Stockhausen. In an unlikely beginning to what became a stunning display of artistry, Dennis and I gave our rendition of Stockhausen’s work, complete with costumes and staging. I cannot describe what a thrill it was for me to be making music with such a class act. Thank you Dennis for the opportunity!

From the stage of “high-art” in academia to the heart of Los Angeles’s underground gypsy scene, I played with Milen Kirov’s Orkestar MÉZÉ at the Malabomba Series at the Bordello Bar in downtown LA. This “peasant-funk” band brought the house down! What a thrill!

Today, PLOTZ! will burn up the Camarillo Arts and Jazz Festival with some fiery gypsy rock jazz, and I will join Killsonic in the evening for a frenzy of free-jazz-marching madness the Glow Festival in Santa Monica.

Life has been filled with non-stop music lately – just the way I like it!
